The end of an era

 After 10 years, I am no longer a hen-keeper 😢

Wood Green Animal Shelter collected Abigail on Tuesday to take her to her new home *sigh*

I have been very worried about our plans to move to Orkney and what that would mean for Abigail.  It really wasn't an option for us to take her all that way with us, especially as we will initially be living in rented accommodation.  I contacted Wood Green last autumn and explained the situation to them.  They were absolutely brilliant and reassuring and I was able to add her and Martha to their list of field animals looking for a new home.  I've been keeping in regular contact with them, just to let them know that I was still looking to rehome the girls.

After Martha passed away, I phoned again to let them know that I now only had one hen to be rehomed, and they told me about their field-to-field rehoming scheme.  What this means is that instead of taking your animal/s to Wood Green, they will collect from you and take straight to the new home.  The lovely lass at Wood Green told me that a lady not too far from here was looking for some companions for her remaining hen.  They were collecting some hens from a lady in Luton who was looking to downsize her flock and would collect Abigail on the way back, which they duly did.

So although I am sad to let Abigail go, I am also relieved that she has been able to go to a new home approved by Wood Green.  It's good to know that she will have new hen friends in her twilight years 😊

So there it is, no longer a keeper of hens.  All I have now are these two metal chooks to remind me of my little flock.  Perhaps I will add more of them to the garden ~ they will be much easier to transport to Orkney!

A new chapter

 

The day finally dawned: Adrian retired yesterday!  Neither of us can quite believe how quickly it has actually come around!

I made a couple of cakes for Adrian to take into work.  This is a citrus drizzle loaf...

...and this is a good 'ole Victoria sandwich cake.  It's been a very long time since I did any common or garden baking  and I'd forgotten how much I enjoy it.  (I'm not counting the cake I made for my Dad's 80th birthday last August as that was pretty stressful LOL)  Perhaps I will make the effort to do more.

So, I guess both Adrian and I will have a period of adjustment to make ~ he to no longer having to go out to work every day, and me to no longer having the house to myself every day!  Hopefully we'll soon work things out and won't get under each other's feet too much 😉

Stash busting

I have a lot of yarn and a good deal of it seems to be single balls which have caught my eye for one reason or another.  So in the spirit of continuing the sorting-out ready for moving, I decided that the yarn stash really needs to be given a serious trim!  I thought that it would be good to use up some of those odd balls making blankets for a charity, and whilst doing a search for a charity looking for blankets I came across Blankets for the Homeless.  They are looking for folk to crochet/knit squares or strips, or to donate yarn.  The squares are then sewn together by volunteers to make into blankets of about 4' x 6'.    

I found quite a lot of smaller oddments of yarn in my stash, and decided to use up those first before moving on to the single balls.  To give a bit of unity to the squares, I crocheted the last round of each one using grey yarn.  I also used the grey yarn to join the squares together, and to make a narrow border around the completed blanket.

And here is the finished article!  It may not be the most attractive blanket in the world, but was made with love and will hopefully help to keep someone in need warm 😊
